Black Squirrels

Squirrels have become a favorite mammal:

(Sorry I just couldn’t resist the Up gif!)

One thing intriguing about AU is the black squirrels that live in the NW DC area. I had never seen a black squirrel before coming to DC. The story of DC’s black squirrels is that 18 squirrels came to DC from Canada during Teddy Roosevelt’s presidency. The 18 squirrels were released at the National Zoo in DC. The squirrels have multiplied and been successful. Some theories about the success of the squirrels is that their dark coats allow them to absorb more heat during the winter. Scientists say that there is no difference between the black squirrels and the normal gray squirrels. According to some reports, the black squirrels make up 5 – 25% of the squirrel population in some areas. Here’s a picture I snapped of a black squirrel:

Sorry my post is so random. Guess it’s just how I’m preparing for and avoiding finals!
